Topical numbing products can cause irritation and, rarely, serious reactions. Know what to check before using one.

Numbing is an effect, not a diagnosis

Benzocaine is a local anesthetic found in some topical products. Certain products are marketed to reduce sensitivity and delay ejaculation, but they do not explain why someone is experiencing distress or a change in sexual function. A clinician can help distinguish persistent premature ejaculation from occasional variation, medication effects, or other concerns.

Choose a product labeled for the intended use

Do not repurpose an oral, dental, or unrelated skin anesthetic for genital use. Formulations and directions differ. Check the active ingredients, concentration, expiration date, and warnings. More product or a longer exposure is not necessarily safer or more effective. Avoid damaged skin and follow the specific directions rather than an online dosing suggestion.

Consider irritation and transfer

Burning, rash, or worsening discomfort can indicate irritation or allergy. Numbing medication may also transfer to a partner and reduce their sensation. Follow the product’s instructions about removal, timing, and barrier compatibility. Discuss use openly rather than treating reduced sensation as a substitute for communication or consent.

Recognize a rare but serious reaction

Benzocaine can rarely cause methemoglobinemia, a condition that reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Blue or gray lips or skin, shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, headache, confusion, or a rapid heartbeat after exposure can be emergency symptoms. Stop exposure and seek emergency care rather than applying more medication or waiting for symptoms to resolve.

Tell a clinician about relevant conditions

Discuss previous reactions to local anesthetics, other medicines, and significant medical conditions before use. Keep topical anesthetics away from children. If a product is swallowed accidentally or exposure is excessive, contact a poison-control service or emergency care as appropriate.

Look beyond a single product

If ejaculation concerns are persistent or upsetting, a qualified clinician may discuss behavioral approaches, counseling, or other treatment options. A topical product can be one part of a plan, but success should be measured by comfort, control, and satisfaction—not by trying to remove all sensation.
