How to Take the Wegovy Pill Correctly (and Why SNAC Absorption Matters)

The daily Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) offers a needle-free alternative to weekly GLP-1 injections, but how you swallow it determines how much medication reaches your bloodstream. Because peptide hormones are naturally digested by stomach enzymes, oral semaglutide requires strict morning timing (1,2).

The 6-step morning routine for the Wegovy tablet

1. Take one tablet first thing upon waking after an overnight fast, ideally at the same time every morning.
2. Swallow the tablet whole — never split, crush, or chew it.
3. Use only a small sip of plain water — up to 120ml (4 fl oz) maximum. Never use coffee, tea, juice, or sparkling water.
4. Set a 30-minute timer and remain upright (sitting, standing, or getting ready for your day).
5. Wait the full 30 minutes before eating breakfast, drinking coffee or extra water, or taking other pills.
6. Levothyroxine note: If you also take thyroid medication, take the Wegovy tablet first with ≤120ml water, wait 30 minutes, take levothyroxine, and wait another 30–60 minutes before eating — or discuss bedtime levothyroxine dosing with your clinician.

Why SNAC makes the 30-minute empty-stomach rule essential

Oral semaglutide tablets are co-formulated with SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)amino]caprylate). As the intact tablet rests against the stomach lining, SNAC creates a tiny, temporary local buffer that protects semaglutide from stomach enzymes and helps it cross into capillaries (2).

Even with SNAC, oral bioavailability is modest — which is why a 25mg daily Wegovy tablet corresponds clinically to a 2.4mg weekly injection. Food, coffee, or even a large glass of water dilutes that localized SNAC microenvironment and cuts absorption sharply.

What if you forget your morning Wegovy pill?

If you realize later in the day after eating or drinking that you forgot your tablet, skip the missed dose and resume your normal routine the next morning — never take two tablets at once (1).
