Conditioner is a grooming tool, not a gender-specific product category. Choose by how your hair behaves and how much product it comfortably tolerates.

Begin with the result you want

Conditioning can make hair feel smoother and easier to detangle. Decide whether you mainly need slip, softer-feeling lengths, or a less heavy finish. A product marketed for a particular hair type can be a starting point, but the result on your own hair matters more than the promise on the front.

Match application to texture

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests focusing conditioner on the ends for fine or straight hair and along the lengths for dry or curly hair. Follow the product’s directions for amount and rinsing. Coating the scalp is not automatically necessary, and a larger amount does not guarantee a better result.

Use it alongside gentle detangling

For thick, curly hair, detangling before rinsing out conditioner can be helpful. For straight hair, the best timing can differ. Work through sections without pulling, starting with the ends. Conditioner does not make rough brushing harmless or reverse every type of damage caused by heat, chemicals, or repeated friction.

Adjust one thing at a time

If the result feels coated or flat, try less product or a lighter formula. If irritation appears, stop and reassess rather than layering more products. Persistent scalp symptoms are not necessarily a conditioner problem. A simple rinse-out routine may be enough; leave-in products and masks are optional additions, not requirements for everyone.
