A relationship structure is not a substitute for trust. What matters is whether all involved adults understand the arrangement and can choose freely.

Clarify what the proposal means

People use terms such as open relationship and nonmonogamy differently. Discuss what each person is asking for, what remains private, and what information partners expect to share. Do not assume that agreeing to a label means agreeing to every possible arrangement or to a particular person’s interpretation.

Make room for a genuine no

A proposal is not consensual if declining leads to threats, punishment, or pressure to prove trust. Someone may not want this structure, even if they respect other people’s choices. Presenting it as the only way to keep a relationship can make honest agreement difficult. Different preferences may be a real incompatibility.

Include other people’s choices

Any additional partner deserves accurate information relevant to their consent. Discuss boundaries around time, privacy, communication, and safer-sex practices before acting. Testing, contraception, and protection decisions may need individualized healthcare advice; a general relationship article cannot provide a risk-free arrangement or a universal testing schedule.

Plan for changing circumstances

Agree on how concerns will be raised and what happens if someone wants to pause or leave the arrangement. A boundary is not permission to control another person, and discomfort is not automatically a failure to be sufficiently open-minded. Revisit agreements without assuming anyone must continue indefinitely because they once agreed.
